CARICOM Secretariat ICT Festival

ImageOn Friday 22nd May 2009 the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat hosted its first Children’s ICT Festival at the Guyana Conference Centre under the theme “Protecting Children in Cyberspace”. The festival comprised a number of workshops for school children and parents/teachers, and was designed to increase awareness of the innovative possibilities in the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) and the Internet, but also served highlight the threats that can be posed to users particularly young children. Over one hundred and twenty children from local primary and secondary schools participated in workshops as part of the ICT Festival. The four workshops hosted for the schoolchildren were: Making/Producing a Personal Video; Making/Producing Music; Creating a Website; and News Production. In addition, a workshop targeted specifically for parents and teachers sought to provide Guidelines on Child-safe Internet Use.

Very few ministries responsible for Energy in the region have a web presence and only Jamaica has a section devoted to renewable energy. The Caribbean Information Platform on Renewable Energy (CIPORE) was developed for the provision of information on renewable energy in the region, it will be integral to assist the local ministries responsible for energy build their capacity in this area.
