Disaster Preparedness & Response Systems

The main strategic areas to be addressed with regard to the use of ICT by CDEMA CU and Participating States going forward are as follows:
(a) Developing an overarching policy on the role of ICT in Disaster Management in the region. Since that is already in motion, the focus would probably be on consolidating and refining what has been articulated so far, determining whether there are additional issues to be addressed, and ensuring a coherent strategy is articulated. This would address the following at a high level:
(i) what is it we intend to achieve from use of ICT in DRR in the region
(ii) how we
intend to achieve it and
(iii) who will lead it.

This project aims to enhance the effectiveness of Disaster Management practices in the Caribbean region through the identification and testing of innovative Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) applications. Research will be conducted to ascertain the ICT capacity of CDERA Participating States utilizing a number of methodologies and approaches. Based on the findings, Pilot States will be selected for training and testing of applications and tools recommended.

The national Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Household survey was launched in April of 2008 at a press briefing at the Office of the Prime Minister on the Queen Elizabeth Highway in St. John’s Antigua. As stated then, the purpose of the household survey was to gather statistics on the use of ICTs in the national community. The survey follows upon two similar surveys which were conducted recently to gauge the extent of ICT usage with the public sector as well as within the business sector. In addition to finding out what is going on in the national community vis-à-vis ICTs, it is expected that the results of household ICT survey will provide concrete evidence and facts upon which national ICT policy and strategies can be engineered.
